- "Google
searches for quality not quantity." ... "The database
will be built by continually monitoring the number of stories from all
news sources, along with average story length, number with bylines, and
number of the bureaux cited, along with how long they have been in business.
Google's database will also keep track of the number of staff a news source
employs, the volume of internet traffic to its website and the number of
countries accessing the site." -NewScientist

including the news organizations name in a Google
News query only news from that source is returned. For example,
Google news search Iraq
news by incluiding: <{News Source Name}
{Iraq}>. Click the "Sort by date" button
in the upper right to see the most recent news indexed by Google from that
source (or add: [&scoring=d] to the end of the query string) . Some
of the Google news sources that can be queried (keyword preset for <Iraq>)
include: <ABCby
date>

"Daypop
probably won't be able to handle most of your queries, but that's not necessarily
a drawback. This search tool is among the finest
at what it does: ferreting out the latest news. Launched as a labor of
love by self-professed current events aficionado Daniel Chan (who built
the engine because he couldn't find the latest news and opinions about
what was happening during the last presidential election), this is the
site we choose when we're looking for the very latest in current events."

Type in a subject or keyword
for recent news.
AllTheWeb
and Moreover
are exceptional at being targeted and relevant. AltaVista
uses Moreover's technology but provides more results.
Daypop
primarily searches weblogs, which can lead to novel results and nice human
touches. Google,
the search.king, has substantially increased its offering but is still
officially 'beta.'.
Rocketinfo (previously
RocketNews) has been returning
LOTS of results - drop down the 'days' for even more results.
