"Bush
to leave a record budget deficit of $482 billion:
[Republican President Bush] White House officials say the economy and a
bipartisan stimulus package caused the worsening picture for 2009, but
Democrats blame Bush's tax cuts and fiscal management." ... "Democrats
on Capitol Hill blamed the revised deficit figures on Bush's large tax
cuts and freewheeling spending." ... ""If we gave Olympic medals for fiscal
irresponsibility, President Bush would take the gold, the silver and the
bronze, because he's got the three highest record deficits ever," said
[South Dakota Democratic Senator] Sen. Kent Conrad (D-S.D.), chairman of
the Senate Budget Committee. "He sets records in every single category:
2009 would be the gold; 2004 the silver; 2008 the bronze."" ... "[South
Carolina Democratic Representative] Rep. John M. Spratt Jr. (D-S.C.) noted
that Bush inherited a budget surplus from his Democratic predecessor, so
the blame for the poor fiscal performance rests with him." ... ""Mr. Bush
came to office with the biggest surpluses in history and he will leave
office with the biggest deficit in history. That's the bottom line," said
Spratt, chairman of the House Budget Committee." -By

want to rein in the power of the so-called "527s," the independent political
committees that skirt the campaign finance laws with unlimited financing
and unregulated campaign attacks." ... "But two of [Republican] McCain's

behind a new attack ad against [Democratic] Obama, "an apparent violation
of the Arizona Republican's new conflict of interest policy,'' the Huffington
Post notes." ... ""Sens. [Connecticut Independent Senator] Joseph Lieberman

for the McCain camp as well as positions on the board of advisers of Vets
for Freedom, an advocacy group that supports the Iraq war,'' the HuffPost

But under McCain's newly-implemented ethics policy, Lieberman and Graham's
role with Vets for Freedom is now proving problematic." -By

GOP [GOP=Grand Old Party=Republican] Candidate Spoke At Hitler Event:
[Indiana Republican Tony Zirkle 2008 Election] Candidate For Indiana District
Defends Speech At American National Socialist Workers Party Event Celebrating
Nazi's Birthday." ... "A congressional candidate is defending his speech
to a group celebrating the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birth, saying
he appeared simply because he was asked." ... "Tony Zirkle, who is seeking
the Republican nomination in northern Indiana's 2nd District, stood in
front of a painting of Hitler, next to people wearing swastika armbands
and with a swastika flag in the background for the speech to the American
National Socialist Workers Party in Chicago [Illinois] on Sunday." ...
""I'll speak before any group that invites me," Zirkle said Monday. "I've
spoken on an African-American radio station in Atlanta."" ... "He compared
his speech to other politicians appearing at Bob Jones University." ...
"[Republican] George W. Bush, then a candidate for president, was criticized
eight years ago for speaking at the South Carolina school, which teaches
students that Catholicism is a cult. Also at the time of the speech, the

- "One
Year Later, Market Where McCain Strolled ‘Freely’ Is Controlled By Sadr,
Too Unsafe For Americans To Visit." ... "On April
1, 2007, [2008 Election Republican Presidential Candidate and Arizona Senator]
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ [Republican-Arizona]) strolled through the open-air
Shorja market in Baghdad [Iraq's capital] in an effort to prove that Americans
are “not getting
the full picture” of what’s going on in Iraq. In a press conference
after his Baghdad tour, McCain told a reporter that his visit to the market
was proof that people could “walk
freely” in parts of Baghdad." ... "What McCain failed to mention was
that he was accompanied by “100 American soldiers, with three
Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead.” He also appeared
to be wearing a bulletproof vest during his visit." ... "Since that trip,
McCain has claimed that the situation in Iraq has improved even more. A
few months ago, McCain claimed that “we’ve
succeeded militarily” in Iraq. Things, of course, are going so well,
that he wants to keep U.S. troops there for at
least 100 years." ... "McCain is now back in Iraq for a “surprise
visit with Iraqi and American diplomatic and military leaders.” He
is joined by fellow Iraq war defenders Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT [Independent
Democrat-Connecticut]) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC [Republican-South Carolina]).
But it’s unlikely they will be visiting the Shorja market again. Today,
CNN reported that they tried to visit the Shorja market, but it was too
unsafe and they were unable to go:"

"We got close to that marketplace today, Jim, but our own security advisers
here in Iraq did not want us to go there. They didn’t believe it was safe
for an American to be in that area. We were in a thriving marketplace nearby."
... "But when you show up, the local Iraqis, while it is clear security
is better on the street — it is clear there are more markets open, just
the traffic jams alone tell you that things are better on the streets of
Baghdad — it’s also a very sensitive potential neighborhoods." ... "That
one marketplace, as a matter of fact, you do see Iraqi police, you do see
the Iraqi army, but in truth, that area is controlled by the radical
cleric Moqtada al Sadr’s Mahdi army." -CNN

It certainly was not meant in anyway to be offensive," she said."

would be most pronounced in the Southern and Western states President Bush
carried in 2000 and 2004, say lawmakers interviewed by The Hill. In total,
32 members of Congress from these “red states” have endorsed Obama. Twenty-two

Carolina - "Health
Care Up to Public, Edwards Says." ... "[2008 Election
Democratic Presidential Candidate and North Carolina's] Former Senator
John Edwards does not discount the possibility that his health care proposal,
which would allow Americans to buy new government insurance packages modeled
on Medicare, could evolve into a federalized system like those in Canada
and many European countries. And if it does, Mr. Edwards said he would
be just fine with that." ... "But Mr. Edwards, of North Carolina, emphasized
in a 40-minute interview on health policy that the choice would be made
not in Washington, but by consumers in an open marketplace where private
insurance competes with government plans." ... "“American health consumers
will decide which works best,” Mr. Edwards said Wednesday afternoon while
traveling through South Carolina on his campaign bus. “It could continue
to be divided. But it could go in one direction or the other, and one of
the directions is obviously government or single-payer. And I’m not opposed
to that.”" ... "If the government is able to undercut private insurers
on price — by forgoing profit, reducing overhead, and maximizing economies
of scale — it theoretically could put the private system out of business
and become the de facto insurer for the nation." ... "Republican candidates
and policy strategists have raised the specter of “socialized medicine”
and depicted the Democratic plans as a back-door route to a so-called single-payer
government system." ... "Mr. Edwards brushed off that critique. “There
is nothing back-door about it,” he said. “It’s right through the front
door. We’re going to let America decide what health care system works for
them.”" (1, 2)
